Cerecare Wellness Center for Children is a unique not-for-profit school serving children in China with cerebral palsy and earlier this month, they celebrated their 10th anniversary. Cerebral palsy (also commonly known as CP) is a result of damage to one or more areas of the brain that controls motor function during fetal development or some time shortly after birth. Those suffering from CP may show signs of awkward coordination or movement while in severe cases, victims are unable to move independently and have severely affected speech. Cerecare is a unique school that tends to almost all the needs of its students. Students live, learn and receive treatments and therapy at this very special school. Once you walk into the building, there are photos of the students at different events or attending class and guests can already get the sense that this is a place where the students are truly loved. Many attribute the unique environment to the incredible story of its founder Lyu Shun ling. Suffering from CP herself, she understands what it is like for her students and has dedicated her life to making sure others with CP have the support they need in order to live their lives to the fullest. Teacher Lyu grew up in Shanghai and was not formally diagnosed until she was 18. She underwent many different forms of treatment and it was not until years later that she discovered Traditional Chinese Acupressure to have the best effect. Experts say that if those with CP do not start treatment before the age of six, their chances of improvement reduce drastically. With extreme perseverance, Teach Lyu was able to walk out of her front door unassisted for the first time in her life at the age of 30.
Last Sunday’s celebration was a large milestone for the school. They have now grown from helping children in Teacher Lyu’s home to multiplying in locations to serve a greater population. There was a large turnout from students, families, sponsors, media, and volunteers. The event honored the staff who tirelessly work towards Teacher Lyu’s vision and some of whom have been with the school since the very beginning. Sponsors were acknowledged with paintings from the children while large group paintings were auctioned off to support the organization. The highlight of the day was seeing the students who earned most improved students of the year as well as alumnae who have since gone to university.
SVG has proudly worked in many capacities to support Cerecare because we believe they are truly making a difference. Over the past year, we have provided grant management for an overseas foundation that is sponsoring the teacher trainings and team building for the teachers at Cerecare’s new location, which will serve teenagers with CP.
We were also excited to bring participants in a new CSR program we launched in partnership with Guanaitong, a third party human resources agency to the event to see the students they are supporting. Clients of Guanaitong accumulate points through Guanaitong’s services and are now able to use donate those points to Cerecare. The donated points are translated into the daily necessities of the children like a day’s supply of food.
